What is Non Alcoholic Mulled Wine

Mulled wine is a popular alcoholic wine beverage served during the holiday season. It is typically made with red wine, mulling spices like cloves, star anise, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, fresh orange slices, and sometimes brandy. All the ingredients are added to a pot and simmered until the flavors meld and become a deliciously spiced, warm alcoholic beverage.

I’ve created an easy non alcoholic mulled wine recipe with my own twist for this recipe, using alcohol free red wine, cloves, cinnamon, fresh ginger, and whole cranberries. This wintry version has amazing flavour, the same warming spices, and a delicious cranberry ginger spin!

What Makes This Recipe Great

This alcohol free mulled wine recipe is easy, festive, and super cozy. It makes the perfect addition to any holiday gathering, as a thoughtful hostess gift, or as a make-ahead drink for easy planning!

My favourite thing about this recipe is that it’s so simple and versatile. It’s easy to put together over the stovetop or in a slow cooker, switch up the fruit and spices, make mocktail and alcoholic versions, and really make it your own!

Ingredient Notes

  • Non alcoholic red wine: You can use regular wine or a wine alternative; I recommend a red cabernet or merlot style wine replacement. Look for one that’s drier (vs. sweet), as some non alcoholic replacements can be quite sweet.
  • organic cane sugar: If you do end up with a sweeter wine, you can adjust the amount of added sugar accordingly. You can also use brown sugar for a deeper flavour, if preferred.
  • fresh cranberries: I recommend using fresh cranberries, rinsed, and whole.
  • ginger: I used fresh, thinly sliced ginger for this recipe, which adds such a nice flavour. However, you can use powdered ginger in a pinch.
  • whole cloves
  • cinnamon sticks

Step-by-Step instructions

  1. Add your wine and all your remaining ingredients to a large pot. Bright the pot up to medium heat, then lower it to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.
  2. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes up to a few hours.
  3. Strain before serving and enjoy.

Secrets to Success

  • Flavour: The longer you simmer, the more flavour in the end product! Cook on low, slow heat and partially cover so as not to let too much wine evaporate.
  • Fruit: You can customize the fruit you add based on what is available and in season. Try dried citrus, fresh citrus, berries, apples, and apple cider for a Fall feel, and other spices and herbs like rosemary, thyme, mint, etc.
  • Flavor: You can add red grape juice, cranberry juice, or pomegranate juice to add some extra fruity flavor. Adjust the sugar accordingly due to the sweetness of the juices.

Serving Tips

  • You can prepare this in advance for events/entertaining and then warm it up before serving.
  • You can also use a crockpot or instant pot to serve out while keeping things warm.

Storage Tips

  • Put leftover wine in a pitcher or container with a lid and store it in the fridge. Reheat over the stove top when ready to serve. It will keep for up to 3 days if stored properly.
